History & Glossary

Nafplio is considered to be one of the most beautiful and romantic towns in Greece. Here, we walk through Greek history from archaic times to the present. Legend says that the town was founded by Nafplios, son of the god Poseidon. Nafplios’ son Palamides fought in the Trojan War and today, his namesake, the huge Palamides castle, still stands atop the hill overlooking the town. We will drive you up to this famous castle to explore it and to enjoy the panoramic view.

Mycenae. One of the World Heritages of Unesco, homeland of king Agamemnon when he returned as a winner from the Troyar war. Your guided archaeological and historical tour will start at the vaulted tomb, known as   the “Treasury of Atreus”, one of the most impressive works of Mycenaean burial architecture. Continue to the Lion Gate, visit Grave Circle A, the “Megaron”: the Palace of the Mycenaean kings and the Museum.

Epidaurus, one of the most famous therapeutical centers of the ancient world and a UNESCO world heritage Theatre. Guided archaeological and historical tour of the Temple of Asclepius, the Abaton, the   Tholos   (dome)   with   its   puzzling   function,   the   Stadium, the Ceremonial Banqueting hall, the Katagogion, the Museum and the Theatre, enjoying its magnificent acoustics. After Epidaurus we will a 2 km walk, in a preserved ancient path through pine trees and a small stream to enjoy nature.

Nemea, is the largest wine growing   area   of   Greece,   famous   for   its   wine   since   ancient   times. It has more than 40 wineries!! Land for the wine lovers. We have chosen the best for you! It’s the birth land of God Dionysus and it is the place where mythical Hercules killed the lion of Nemean. Four different wineries, each one represents a different category, geographical location-altitude-varieties of wines, one is a family small winery and the rest of medium to big size. Each one has their story to tell and their finest wines to share! We will pass through the magical place of the temple of Zeus, where the revival of the Nemean games are held every 4 years.

Hydra, built in the shape of an amphitheatre on a slope overlooking the Argosaronic gulf, is one of the most romantic destinations in Greece. Traditional stone mansions, narrow cobblestoned streets, secluded squares and above all the banning of cars and the use of around 500 donkeys as means of public transportation, explain the reason why Hydra preserved its distinctive atmosphere through the passage of time.

Spetses, the island of aromas, also known as Isola di Spezie under Venetian rule and Pityoussa (pine-clad) in ancient times, Spetses, at just 54 nautical miles from Athens, is a picturesque, car-free island with a unique architecture, naval history and culture. The island flourished during the early 18th century, developing into a significant naval power, dominating the major shipping routes of the Mediterranean.

Porto Heli is a small seaside town with a large port. This port is a frequent mooring place for fishing boats and yachts in summer, giving Porto Heli in Greece a cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Itinerary The great Nafplio experience

Day 1 – Nafplio City Food Tour

Either on FOOT or by BICYCLE, you will be guided through this town, that was the first capital of Greece, along the main highlights and historical monuments. You will be able to literally get A FULL TASTE OF NAFPLIO, as you are having several FOOD STOPS where you will taste a variety of local products and learn about the secrets of the authentic Greek cuisine.

Day 2 – Mycenae – Mountain Village or/ Olive farm experience

A visit at the archaeological site of MYCENAE, a UNESCO World Heritage. You will hear all about the HISTORY and be mesmerized by the architectural treasures of the citadel of King Agamemnon, who led the Trojan war.

After, you can choose to visit a small MOUNTAIN VILLAGE for a breath of fresh air and lunch of local produce, in the cool shade under the plane tree on the village square. Meet the locals, or take a COOKING LESSON. The village is known for its fresh water sources, and has beautiful luscious green nature.

Alternatively, you can choose to visit an OLIVE OIL farm for a FARM TO TABLE experience. You will have a tour on the olive grove, taste olive oil and learn about the ins and outs of the local produce.

Day 3 – Epidaurus & surroundings

Εxplore the area of EPIDAURUS, the archaeological site of Asclepeus (the God of healing), also an UNESCO World Heritage with a long HISTOR, and have a chance to be on stage at this impressive ancient theater and experience the unique acoustics.

Then you can enjoy a short hike to the ancient olive tree of Hercules, approx. 2.500 years old, that still produces olives up till today. You can also choose to go SNORKELING at The Sunken City, where you will be able to see remains of a submerged Roman villa underwater, or visit a hidden MONASTERY high on the cliffs of a gorge.

Day 4 – Νemea wine tasting

Visit a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) for wine production and 3 wineries for a WINE TASTING program. Learn the the secrets of wine producing and be a “connoisseur” of the excellent wines that Greece produces.

Day 5 – Porto Heli Family farm

Become a local farmer for a day and experience the greek traditional hospitality at a local family farm. Have a chance to learn and taste, during a COOKING LESSON or HERBAL THERAPY (with medicinal wild herbs and plants) and enjoy a FAMILY LUNCH with local delicacies.

Day 6 – Hydra & Spetses Islands

Take the chance to visit the closest Argosaronic islands to the city of Nafplio. Enjoy Hydra’cosmopolitan vibe with its shopping boutiques and donkey rides, and Spetses, the fisherman’s island, with a rich history.

Day 7 – Mycenaean Symposium

A gastronomic event, a once in a lifetime experience. Enjoy SLOW FOOD, with WINE, DANCE, and PHILOSOPHYING. With authentic Greek dishes of local produce prepared in ceramic pots , dance the night away, and have the opportunity to learn the first steps of several traditional Greek dances.
