History & Glossary

This place has seen days of glory as well a decline. The most important part of its history begins in the Byzantine times until. From the hands of the Byzantine Empire is passed to the Franks (1212-1389).Then come the first Venetian period (1389-1540), the first Ottoman Period (1540-1686), the second Venetian period (1686-1715) and the second Ottoman period (1715-1822).
Furthermore,
during the night of the 29th of 1822 the Greek rebels, led by Staikos Staikopoulos, conquered the battlements of Palamidi and sang a heartfelt mass in the small church of St. Andrew, inside the castle.
The 3rd National Assembly decreed that Nafplio become the seat of the Government.
Finally,
on January 8th 1828, Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of the Liberated Greek State arrived in Nafplio. In January 1833, the first king of Greece, King Otto, son of Lois of Bavaria disembarked in Nafplio, chosen by the Great European Powers. In 1834 the capital was transferred to Athens.
