History & Glossary

In Greek, “meli” (μέλι) is the word for honey, while “melissa” (μέλισσα) means honeybee. Greek honey—often referred to as the “Nectar of the Gods”—has been one of Greece’s most treasured natural products for over 3,000 years.
Greek honey is considered among the finest in the world. This exceptional quality is the result of several unique factors: abundant summer sunshine, extraordinary biodiversity, and the remarkable richness of Greek flora, which includes more than 850 plant species found nowhere else on Earth. Earth scientists and botanists regard Greece as having the richest flora in the Mediterranean basin, with over 7,500 species of herbs, plants, wildflowers, and trees.
Thanks to this remarkable natural environment, Greek bees produce a wide variety of distinctive honeys—one of the main reasons for the country’s global reputation and enduring pride in its honey. It is easy to understand why Greek honey holds such a respected position on the international market.
Each year, Greece produces approximately 12,000 tons of honey. The majority of forest honey comes from pine, fir, and oak trees. These honeys are particularly valued because they do not crystallize and have a high nutritional value, due to their rich content of trace elements such as potassium, sodium, magnesium, and iron.
