Sea Kayaking in Epidaurus

Sunken city route

Combine sightseeing and sea kayaking with this sea kayak tour in Epidavros. Explore top landmarks, including the Small Ancient Theatre of Epidauros and the Ancient Sunken City, also known as Argolida’s Lost Atlantis.

Departing from the port of Old Epidavros, we follow the coastline – an untouched and sublime landscape, passing by dense vegetation, stopping at pristine isolated beaches along the way towards our historical sites. Our first site is the Small Ancient Theatre of Epidavros, built in the 4th century B.C.

Our second site is none other than the Ancient Sunken City. The Sunken City of Epidaurus dates mainly to the Classical period (4th century BCE), with evidence of use continuing into Hellenistic and Roman times. In some places, the ancient breakwater is still preserved. Only two meters in depth, this makes it a perfect location for underwater sightseeing, snorkelling, and underwater pictures! Here, you will also discover the area’s beautiful coastline and wilderness with a scenic paddle to a quiet beach. Make sure to swim, snorkel, and sunbathe!

Probably the best choice in this area, due to its unique combination of history, culture, fun, sea and sun!.

Go sea kayaking in turquoise waters. Enjoy everything that these idyllic shores have to offer, or even take a rest at the local beach bars with some cold refreshments!

You can adjust your activities according to your mood. We are always flexible and are going to provide you with full face snorkel masks.or anything else you will need. Just ask for it!

History & Glossary

Sunken City of Epidaurus
Not far from Epidaurus, famous for its Ancient Theatre and remarkable acoustics, lies an ancient sunken city. The Sunken City is located just two meters below sea level, in the bay of Agios Vlassios, on Kalymnios Beach in Ancient Epidaurus.
The visible ancient ruins are mainly the remains of a Roman villa dating to the 2nd century AD, situated near the Agora, which once lay opposite the ancient port beneath the Acropolis of Ancient Epidaurus. According to archaeological research, this was a large rural Roman villa (villa rustica), where wealthy Romans lived along with their servants.
Walls, building foundations, large amphorae, and paved sections now lie submerged just a few meters below the sea surface—and only a short distance from the shore. The fact that an entire part of the ancient settlement has remained underwater for centuries is truly fascinating. What makes this archaeological site even more impressive is that visitors can literally swim… through history. It is undoubtedly a unique experience.

The Little Theatre of Epidaurus:
The Little Theatre of Epidaurus is located in an area known as Nisi, near the port of Palea Epidaurus. It served as the theatre of the ancient city-state and hosted not only dramatic performances, but also religious and political events.
The theatre was discovered in the early 1970s beneath an olive grove, and its restoration continues to this day. Construction began in the 4th century BC, and it was originally built to meet the needs of this small city-state, which explains its relatively modest size. The theatre originally featured 9 tiers with 18 rows of seats, accommodating approximately 2,000 spectators. Several seats bear inscriptions indicating that the theatre was dedicated to the god Dionysos and that it was constructed in sections.
During Roman times, the theatre underwent major alterations: the orchestra became semicircular and the seating was reorganized. It is believed, however, that the Little Theatre of Epidaurus remained in use for only about seven centuries, as the historian Pausanias, who visited the area in the mid-2nd century AD, made no mention of it. Today, an old two-storey house is preserved in front of the theatre’s orchestra.
Following extensive excavations and restoration work over recent decades, the Little Theatre of Epidaurus now hosts the annual Greek Festival during the summer months, featuring music, dance, and theatrical performances. Currently, seating is available for approximately 800 spectators, with ongoing efforts to restore additional seats. Performances are held mainly in modern and ancient Greek.
