Sea kayak Nafplio

Medieval castles route

An excursion starting beneath the castle of Palamidi, leading through culture and through centuries of history, to a unique life experience. You will paddle along the ancient road of Nafplio, under Akronauplia fortress, and are rewarded with the breathtaking views of the dominant cliffs covered in succulent vegetation with the fortress as its crown at the top.

We continue along the coastline until we reach a small secluded beach for enjoying our delicacies and refreshment. Once refreshed, depending on weather conditions, we start paddling back to our starting port, or reach our base at Karathona beach, where you can enjoy other watersports, such as SUP and water-cycle before we transfer you back to Nafplio, which transfer is included in the price. History & Glossary

ACRONAFPLIA
Nafplio’s oldest castle, Acronafplía, rises at the top of the old town. Once the whole city existed within these walls. Parts of the castle was built already in the Bronze Age, and there are still remnants of these old walls in the western part of the castle. Acronafplia was later extended and amplified by respectively Romans, Franks, Venetians and Turks. The thick castle walls form a nice backdrop for the city, and in the last years, the castle is being restored. Especially the eastern parts deserve a visit.

PALAMIDI
Palamidi is the fortress that dominates the city, in the sense that it almost floats on a steep hill (216 m) over Nafplio. Between 1711 and 1714 the Venetians built the castle (an amazingly short time), and this is in fact the final fortress of importance the Venetians built outside their own country. It’s also considered one of the most impressive. Yet, in 1715, one year after completion, the Turks defeated the castle.
Palamidi is very well preserved, and it’s evocative and beautiful to walk on the worn stones, between the massive walls and buildings. Among other things you can try sitting in the freedom fighter Kolokotronis’ jail cell, visit the Ag. Andreas Church, and admire the eight bastions within the sturdy castle walls. The huge water tanks contribute to the town’s water supply even today.
