History & Glossary

The Corinth Canal connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea .
It is the unquestionable sea “umbilical cord” between Western and Eastern Mediterranean.
We are going to stop to see this miracle of modern construction and then you will be driven to see the ancient Diolkos passage. It (Δίολκος, from the Greek dia διά, “across”, and holkos ὁλκός, “portage machine”) was a paved trackway near Corinth, in ancient Greece, which enabled boats to be moved overland across the Isthmus of Corinth. The shortcut allowed ancient vessels to avoid the long and dangerous circumnavigation of the Peloponnesian peninsula.

Nafplio is considered to be one of the most beautiful and romantic towns in Greece. Here, we walk through Greek history from archaic times to the present. Legend says that the town was founded by Nafplios, son of the god Poseidon. Nafplios’ son Palamides fought in the Trojan War and today, his namesake, the huge Palamides castle, still stands atop the hill overlooking the town. We will drive you up to this famous castle to explore and enjoy the panoramic view.

Mycenae. One of the World Heritage Sites of UNESCO, homeland of king Agamemnon, where he returned as a winner from the Trojan War. Your guided archaeological and historical tour will start at the vaulted tomb, known as the “Treasury of Atreus”, one of the most impressive works of Mycenaean burial architecture. Continue to the Lion Gate, visit Grave Circle A, the “Megaron”: the Palace of the Mycenaean kings and the Museum.

Epidaurus,
one of the most famous therapeutic centers of the ancient world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will have a Guided archaeological and historical tour of the Temple of Asclepius, the Abaton, the Tholos(dome) with its puzzling function, the  Stadium, the Ceremonial Banqueting hall, the Katagogion, the Museum and the Theatre, enjoying its magnificent acoustics. After Epidaurus we will have a 2 km walk, on a preserved ancient path through pine trees and a small stream, to enjoy nature.

Nemea, is the largest wine-growing area of  Greece, famous for its wine since ancient times. It has more than 40 wineries and is considered the Land for the wine lovers!! It’s the birthland of God Dionysus and the place where mythical Hercules killed the Nemean Lion. We will see four different wineries, each one representing a different category, geographical location-altitude-variety of wines; one is a small family winery and the rest medium to big size. Each one has their story to tell and their finest wines to share! We will also visit the magical temple of Zeus, where the revival of the Nemean games is held every 4 years.

Ancient Olympia grew to be the most celebrated sacred site of Ancient Greece, and the birthplace of the Olympic Games, the most important sports events in all antiquity. Starting from 776 B.C., all Greeks – across the then known world – would be united every four years and all hostilities would be suspended so that everyone could take part in these games in the true spirit of sportsmanship. Olympia is now, as it used to be in the past, a famed destination, a powerful landmark known the world over.

At the temple of Apollo in Bassae, the play of light and shadow creates the illusion that the temple is smaller than its actual size, revealing its true dimensions to the observer only gradually as they draw near. In this way, the monument does not force or impose its volume on the space, but exudes power and inspires awe when one is close to it. At the same time, it creates an evolving relationship with the god himself, Apollo, with light being the main element in this gradual revelation.
