The Tour Nafplio – Monemvasia
The 3-hour drive to Monemvasia is definitely worth it. Monemvasia is the Gibraltar of Greece, a natural rock fortress rising dramatically from the sea just offshore the east coast of the Peloponnese. The rock became an island after an earthquake in 375 AD. Your first encounter with the medieval town of MONEMVASIA and the delights of exploring it will have an extraordinary impact on you.
Monemvasia means “ single entrance”. There is only one way to reach Monemvasia. A single stretch of road linked to the mainland will lead you to the only entrance. Entering through the gate into this magical town, you will feel like stepping back into the 15th century.
History
By the 13th century, Monemvasia had become the commercial center of the Byzantine Morea, complementary to Mystras, the spiritual center. It was an important port, controlling the passage of ships travelling around the southern Peloponnese, between Italy and Constantinople. About 50.000 people lived here in those days. It was famous throughout Europe for its highly praised Malvasia wine.
All invaders have left their marks here too: the Franks, Venetians, and Ottoman Turks. To discover the secrets of Monemvasia, we must walk through the lower town with its narrow streets and stone houses, to feel the ghosts and echoes of the past. From the upper town, a zigzag stone path will lead you to the very top of the rock, where the beautiful 13th-century Byzantine church of Agia Sofia is located. The climb is worth it; you will have impressive views along the coast as well.
To experience the full flavor of Monemvasia, we can arrange a COOKING LESSON or WINE TASTING for you.
If you like, you can stay overnight in this romantic town.
Or drive back with us to Nafplio.
Alternatively, we can drive you back to Athens.
