The Hike
Our walk starts at a byzantine monastery that is dedicated to the Holy Virgin. Its history is associated with that of Nafplio for more than 850 years, and the greatest deeds of Modern Greek history took place in front of its byzantine church that has been recently renovated. The monastery was founded as a spiritual school and is built at the remains of the ancient temple of Hera that probably existed here, parts of which have been incorporated into the byzantine church.
There is a water spring that still flows today. Some researchers claim it is the ancient river Kanathos in which goddess Hera regained her virginity every year. We will fill up our water bottles here and start walking!
While going uphill we will see and pick several herbs that grow natural in Greece, and when we arrive at the top we will remind you to look back and admire the panoramic view of the town of Nafplio. Continuing on downhill we will pass orange and mandarin farms, cross a field with olive trees, and go uphill to the church of Saint Marina. Time for a rest and a snack and gaze at the panoramic view of the Argolic Bay!
Our circular walk will take us back to the starting point: the byzantine monastery. Downhill it goes and another amazing panoramic view will appear to us: the whole area of Nafplio, its castles and old town, the seaside, Argos (the oldest continuously inhabited town of Europe -7000 years-) and the mountain ranges in the distance.
