Egg monastery

The sacred Byzantine monastery of ‘Avgo’

After a short drive by car on a dirt road we will start our short hike (1 hour) at the riverbed. We will go uphill through the forest of pine trees. The monastery is so well hidden that we will be able to see it only at the end of our hike when it appears in front of us. We will unveil this well kept secret to you during our walk, tell you its history and explain to you why it is called egg monastery.

In addition,

We will visit the egg monastery and its temple that is totally dug into the rock of the adjoining cliff. Furthermore, we will take you to the upper floor and the roof where you will be amazed by the panoramic view of the gorge, the sea and the surrounding mountains. There we are able to enter the hidden cave, carefully, where remains of the monks that passed away are kept.

After our visit, when it is an appropriate time, we might be able to have a conversation with the one monk that lives here. He chose the path to dedicate his life to this impressive and unique monastery.

Finally,

our walk back will go downhill to the riverbed. Before we will depart, we will walk into the partly dried river bed with its impressive plane tree and rocks that took their shape through water erosion. On our way back we will have a stop at the village that is famous for its artichokes: time for a sweet delicacy made from artichokes or lunch with several dishes made from artichokes!
