History & Glossary

Acrocorinth is a castle nestled on the steep rock of Acrocorinth and rising above the southwest of Ancient Corinth. It was the fortified acropolis for ancient and medieval Corinth. Fortification was ensured through a system of three enclosures, separated by walls, which were in turn reinforced by towers and bastions.

Pirene or Peirene is the name of a fountain or spring in Greek mythology, physically located in Corinth. It was said to be a favored watering-hole of Pegasus, sacred to the Muses. Poets would travel there to drink and receive inspiration.

Lechaion Road is the main north-south artery (cardo maximus) of the Roman city, ultimately linking the Agora of Corinth with the harbor of Lechaion on the Corinthian gulf, 3 kilometers to the north. In the time of Augustus, it was unpaved and was open to wheeled traffic. The road was paved with limestone slabs in the second half of the 1st century, when traffic was confined to pedestrians.
At this period, there were narrow pavements on either side of the road with gutters to carry away rainwater. Rows of shops were created on both sides of the road, and colonnades and bases for dedications were set between the shops and the pavement.
