Yiayia-logy or Grandma tour
From Wiktionary: yiayia, nursery word meaning grandmother, grandma, granny, nan, nanna (mother of one’s parents).
It was an idea from the founder of Grecopaths Team who had two wonderful grandmothers that helped her mother raise her as a child. This activity was created in loving memory of both her yiayias.
Grandmothers, who lived in the beginning of the 20th century and are still alive, are a real gem and a unique heritage of Greece. Most of them had more than 5-6 children, often giving birth outdoors, while cultivating their fields or in a best-case scenario, at home with the help of a midwife.
There were neither electricity nor running water and most men were either dead or fighting on some war, so one can imagine the harsh condition under which they had to live. Most of them had to become both husband and wife, staying at home rising the children and tend to the crops and their property at the same time.
Nevertheless, all authentic recipes, ways and means, customs and stories are carried on to our everyday modern life, though these women. They teach us of the past, pointing out to simpler times and a life view that most of us tend to forget. Nowadays these women are too old, their children and grandchildren having life of their own. They would love to meet you and share some of their stories. At the same time you will get to enjoy delicious, handmade traditional Greek treats and be a part of Greek heritage.
The tour will last for about 4 hours and includes a visit to three of these lovely yiayias – grandmothers, one of which lives and Nafplio while the remaining two, in nearby villages (4-10 km away). So three yiayias, three choices of local handmade goodies and sightseeing en route.
