Our tour starts in front of the ancient theater of Epidaurus with the direction to Ligourio.
We walk 5 km through olive fields in a dirt path and then about1km downhill to the main asphalt road.
After 10 min we meet in our left side the preserved ancient path. It welcomes us an inscription of the 3rd century BC, that exact copy has been hacked at the entrance of the reconstructed area and says to us :
‘This pathway traveler will leads you to the sanctuary of the God of healing”
Continue on, we walk through vegetation and pine trees and with the sound of stream and birds to accompany us.
The path has small uphills and downhills and during our walking we meet ancient Herms and the preserved imprints of chariot lanes (armatrochies) on the rocks.
In a few minutes we approach the river bed which in winter, autumn and spring time we will find water.
At the end of this preserved path will find a small picturesque chapel where ‘Pausanias has a story to tell us’.
We walk totally 1.800 m at the today’s survival ancient path which connected the sanctuary of ancient Epidaurus with the port of Epidaurus and also it was the only one ancient Mycenaean path which connected the argolic towns with the ancient port of Kechries of Saronic gulf.
The first suggested part of the 7km-route, ends here.
If you wish to extend the route, after the preserved ancient path you can continue another 6 km into provincial road with small ascent through olive fields.
During to those 6 km you can see mysterious ruins, a watermill and a byzantine church.
When we reach the Ligourio village, we can visit the ruins of one pyramid with panoramic view of the surrounding area and a small post-byzantine church with interesting frescoes dated from 18th century.
